This is one of the more bizarre Lego collections you might come across. The set re-creates the scene at the end of Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, in which the newly incarnated Darth Vader--fresh off surgery--is raised forward and revealed, strapped to a Frankenstein-like chair. Here, the swiveling seat sits atop a platform, with a battered Anakin Skywalker on one side and Vader on the other. A five-armed, robotic surgeon stands nearby. The whole thing can be reassembled into a turret manned by the evil Sith Lord himself. The 53 pieces are all tiny; little Lego Darth is as cute as a button. An instruction booklet is included. --Andy Boynton

In the Exo-Force storyline, humans are at war against robots that have malfunctioned and are now bent on total domination. On the humans' side is the Mobile Defense Tank, which comes as 355 pieces and a full-color, illustrated instruction booklet that diagrams model construction in 25 steps, with several ministeps along the way. The tank's awesome weaponry is primarily made up of a red LED brick that makes a convincing laser weapon. Also a rapid fire disk launcher sends Cheerio-size plastic discs about 10 feet across the room. Like a lot of other small parts in this set, these energy disks present a choking hazard for very young kids. Parents should especially note these since they're yellow and green and could easily be mistaken for candy. The set has two human pilot minifigs, which have spiky, anime-style hair that covers the back of their heads and hides the fact that the head parts have two expressions to choose from: angry and berserk. Inside the box you'll find eight parts bags, four plastic tank treads, and instructions, which include a four-page Exo-Force comic. Also included is an illustrated block inventory with part numbers, in case you need to ever re-order a replacement block. --Porter B. Hall

Creating a MINDSTORMS robot is challenging -- but not too difficult -- with an illustrated step-by-step booklet and software showing the way. The booklet gives you instructions for building a basic "Quick Start" robot only, which is an easy introduction to the MINDSTORMS experience. This robot took our two adult testers about 30 minutes to build and 30 minutes to program. After that, they spent a lot of time just playing with their creation and testing its abilities.

Once you master the basics of MINDSTORMS, you'll need to use the included software to get instructions for more advanced creations. You can also use the MINDSTORMS web site to find instructions for many other robots, or you can create robots on your own. No matter what you choose to create, the principles are the same: just build the robot using the LEGO elements in the kit, and program it on your computer using the software. Then watch your robot come alive.

Based on the film, which pits Indiana Jones against agents of the Soviet Union in the search for a crystal skull artifact, this set provides a narrative to inspire imaginative play. In addition to the mighty Jungle Cutter with its two gigantic, spinning blades, this set includes a make-shift hideout camouflaged by vines, trees that really break apart when the cutter plows through them, and plenty of jungle spiders. The detailed Indiana Jones figure comes complete with hat, whip, and bag, while Colonel Dovchenko and two Russian Guard mini-figures provide a threatening enemy presence.

Plus there's plenty of cool features to keep the set interesting. Just when it seems like Indy is doomed, you can push the lever on the back of the Jungle Cutter to pop the top pieces off and make it seem like Indy's rocket has caused a catastrophic explosion. Or turn the gear on the hideout to raise and lower the spider web.

Creating the Jungle Cutter
With eight bags containing 511 pieces and a colorful instruction booklet, the Jungle Cutter took our eight-year-old tester about three hours to construct. The process was challenging but not too difficult, with colorful step-by-step illustrations showing the way.

Overall, this set scores a fantastic rating for it's cool design elements. The fact that the blades on the Jungle Cutter turn as you roll the vehicle forward made it a huge hit. Another favorite feature was the sliding door that opens to reveal treasure stashed in a secret
